Emerging Vision Scientist Program

The Annual Emerging Vision Scientists Program, has been a Capitol Hill fixture for a decade, fostering the next generation of vision research advocates. Sponsored by Research to Prevent Blindness, this initiative provides professional development opportunities and showcases early-stage investigators from Departments of Ophthalmology and Schools/Colleges of Optometry.

During Emerging Vision Scientists Program, participants present their cutting-edge research and educate Congressional Members and staff about the importance of vision research. They also invite them to visit their departments, strengthening the connection between emerging vision scientists and policymakers. This program bridges the gap between the scientific community and legislative bodies, advocating for continued support and investment in vision science.

By participating in the Emerging Vision Scientist Program, you will become an advocate for the future of vision science, helping ensure vision research remains a national priority. Take this opportunity to grow as a scientist, communicator, and advocate.

"The vast majority of vision research is funded by federal grants; and it's imperative we continue to have access to robust funding for the National Eye Institute. This funding stream is not only important for vision science researchers to build on our existing research, but for the millions of patients we treat day in and day out. The Emerging Vision Scientist Program taught me how to advocate and encourage our Congressional leaders to make vision research funding a priority today, tomorrow, and for future generations."

“As researchers, it’s imperative we learn how to educate policymakers about the importance of our vision research and how to advocate for additional funding to propel our research forward. I’m also so thankful that during the Emerging Vision Scientist Program I can exchange ideas and research with dozens of other vision researchers, while formulating relationships that will surely endure throughout my career.”
