(Washington, D.C.) Today, the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (NAEVR) announced plans regarding its significant presence at the 2012 ARVO Annual Meeting, to be held May 6-10, 2012, at the Fort Lauderdale Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

In NAEVR Central (located within ARVO Central, Exhibit Hall B/C) attendees can:

  • NEW! Review the Your Candidates, Your Health Web site to learn about their Members of Congress’ positions on medical research and then contact those offices through an easily personalized email letter urging adequate federal vision research funding.
  • NEW! Create a brief video message about their research, including the health and economic benefits, and the impact of potential budget cuts. ARVO and NAEVR would edit these and post on their Web sites to support vision research funding. [Although a sign-up sheet is available to schedule a time, NAEVR will accommodate walk-ups.]
  • Meet with representatives of the Department of Defense’s (DOD) Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC) about defense vision research funding opportunities, Monday-Wednesday. [A sign-up sheet to schedule appointments will be available Sunday at NAEVR Central and at the Monday morning briefing in Palm B].

NAEVR’s Defense-Related Vision Research Opportunities session will be held on Monday, May 7, from 7:30-8:30 am in Palm B and feature representatives from TATRC and the joint DOD/Veterans Affairs (VA) Vision Center of Excellence (VCE), as well as vision researchers who have received funding from the DOD in previous funding cycles.

ARVO will also present two sessions on the importance of advocacy:

  • Advocacy Really Matters: How Can We Make A Difference [Sunday, May 6, from 1:15 – 2:45 pm, Room 305].
  • Advocacy and Fundraising for Vision Research [Tuesday, May 8, from 12:00 to 1:30 pm, Room 114]
