NAEVR AND AEVR ANNOUNCE CAPITOL HILL EVENTS FOR THE 111TH CONGRESS AS IT CONVENES IN EARLY 2009

(Washington D.C.) Today the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (NAEVR) and the Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (AEVR) announced two events in early 2009 to highlight the importance of vision research for the 111th Congress:

  • January 28 Welcome Reception for the 111th Congress, to be held from 5:30-7:30 pm in the foyer of the Rayburn House Office Building. NAEVR will announce its activities associated with a year-long celebration of the 40th anniversary of the creation of the National Eye Institute (NEI). Chief among these is seeking both House and Senate resolutions which acknowledge NEI’s 40 years of research to benefit patients and designate 2010-2020 as the Decade of Vision (DOV). NAEVR/AEVR will conduct a series of DOV-branded activities in 2009, and the years to come, to ensure a sustained awareness of the value of federally funded vision research.
  • February 5 Congressional Briefing entitled Understanding and Screening Usher Syndrome—the Leading Cause of Deaf Blindness, conducted jointly by AEVR and Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB) and held from 12 Noon – 1:15 pm in Room B-338 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

“Finalizing the remaining Fiscal Year (FY) 2009 appropriations bills, including funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the NEI, will be a priority for the new Congress, so keeping the value of vision research top-of-mind is crucial,” said NAEVR/AEVR Executive Director James Jorkasky.
