(Washington, D.C.) Today, the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (NAEVR) and the Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (AEVR) announced that they will participate in the “Rally for Medical Research Hill Day” events, being held from September 17-19, which follow the initial “Rally for Medical Research” that was held on April 8, 2013, in Washington, D.C. As one of the 170 partnering organizations, NAEVR will educate Capitol Hill about the importance of medical research funding and the adverse impacts of sequestration, which cut the Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 National Institutes of Health (NIH) budget by $1.7 billion (5.5 percent) below the FY2012 level and the National Eye Institute (NEI) budget by $39.9 million (5.7 percent).

On September 19, NAEVR will host Goncalo Abecasis, D. Phil. (University of Michigan) in visits with Michigan delegation Members of Congress-he will be one of the more than 250 researchers and patients/survivors who will be engaged in Capitol Hill meetings. That same day, Dr. Abecasis will speak at AEVR’s International Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Awareness Week Congressional Briefing entitled Determining the Genetic Basis of AMD by Using “Big Data,”, to be held from 12 Noon – 1:15 pm in House Rayburn B-369. Dr. Abecasis, whose research focuses on the development of statistical tools for the identification and study of genetic variants in human disease, was recognized in 2012 by Thomson Reuters ScienceWatch for having 12 of the most-cited publications of the year.

“NAEVR and AEVR are pleased to be partnering with the ‘Rally for Medical Research Hill Day’ to build upon the initial April event with a sustained message about the value of medical research and the detrimental effect of budget cuts,” stated NAEVR/AEVR Executive Director James Jorkasky, who will host Dr. Abecasis at all events.
