NIH Releases Fact Sheet on the Impact of Sequestration

Legislative Update
June 10, 2013

On June 3, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) posted a fact sheet on the impact of the sequester on Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 funding, which cuts its FY2012 operating budget of $30.6 billion by $1.7 billion, or 5.5 percent, to a level of $29.15 billion. NEI’s FY2013 operating budget of $662.15 million is $39.9 million, or a 5.7 percent decrease, below the FY2012 level of $702.1 million.

The fact sheet contains useful links to detailed mechanism tables for the NIH overall and the Institutes and Center (I/C) budgets. It provides statistics about the impact on grants, for example noting that NIH will issue about 700 fewer competitive research project grants in FY2013 as compared to FY2012. It also describes the potential delays in medical progress as well as the risk to the scientific workforce.
