NAEVR URGES CONGRESS TO SUPPORT THE BIPARTISAN BUDGET
ACT OF 2015
(Washington, D.C.) Today, the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (NAEVR) issued a statement urging Members of Congress to support the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015. The legislation, which would raise the debt limit through March 2017 and provide sequester relief to both nondefense discretionary funding and defense funding in Fiscal Years (FY) 2016 and 2017, would enable Congress to finalize appropriations for FY2016 , which is currently funded through a Continuing Resolution (CR) at the FY2015 level minus 0.21 percent through December 11, 2015.
NAEVR Executive Director James Jorkasky issued the following statement:
On behalf of the vision research community, the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (NAEVR) urges Members of Congress to support the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015, which reflects an important compromise between leaders of Congress and the White House. This legislation is a critical step in returning to regular order and, coupled with an almost full replacement of sequestrations harmful cuts, enables Congress to finalize FY2016 appropriations bills that invest in Americas future, including its citizens overall health and vision health, through funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and its National Eye Institute (NEI).
Since the vision community has advocated for robust, sustained, and predictable funding for the NIH/NEI, this two-year budget agreement may enable the leaders of the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (LHHS) Appropriations Subcommittees in the House and Senate to implement a meaningful NIH/NEI funding increase, as proposed in their respective bills. This is important, as the NIH and NEI have lost nearly 25 percent of their purchasing power since FY2003, with the recent sequester cuts being especially devastating.
The vision community looks forward to working with Congress to move these important initiatives forward.
