NAEVR COMMENDS SENATE APPROPRIATORS FOR PROPOSED FY2018
$2 BILLION NIH INCREASE, $26 MILLION NEI INCREASE
(Washington, D.C.) Today, the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (NAEVR) issued a statement regarding the September 7 Senate Appropriations Committees approval of a Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (LHHS) spending billapproved by the LHHS Appropriations Subcommittee the prior daythat includes a $2 billion increase for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and a $26 million increase for the National Eye Institute (NEI). This follows House action in July to increase NIH funding by $1.1 billion.
NAEVR Executive Director James Jorkasky issued the following statement:
NAEVR commends Senate Appropriators, especially LHHS Appropriations Subcommittee Chair Roy Blunt (R-MO) and Ranking Member Patty Murray (D-WA), for crafting a bipartisan bill that recognizes biomedical research as a priority by proposing a $2 billion National Institutes of Health (NIH) increase for which NAEVR has advocated. We especially thank Senate appropriators for emphasizing the importance of increases for the Institutes and Centers, such as the National Eye Institute (NEI), which would receive a $26 million increase. Coming on the heels of $2 billion increases in each FY2016 and FY2017, the Senates bill reflects the need for sustained and predictable funding. We also appreciate that, as in the House bill, the Senate bill rejects the Trump Administration proposals that would have cut NIH funding and imposed detrimental policies and structural changes at NIH.
On September 14, as part of the Third Annual Emerging Vision Scientists (EVSs) Day on Capitol Hill, NAEVR will host 20 EVSs in visits with their Congressional delegations. They will thank lawmakers for the past NIH support and urge them to continue the bipartisan approach seen in this bill through a discretionary budget agreement that enables such investments in NIH to be enacted in FY2018 and beyondwithout the threat of sequestration.
