(Washington, D.C.) On February 28, the Board of Directors of the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (NAEVR) and the Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (AEVR) elected Eduardo Alfonso, MD to serve as a Director for the NAEVR and AEVR Board class of 2022-2025.
Dr. Alfonso serves as the chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Director of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, and is the holder of the Kathleen and Stanley J. Glaser Chair in Ophthalmology. He is known for his clinical expertise and research in eye diseases, corneal surgery, and ocular microbiology. Dr. Alfonso is an internationally known expert on ocular infectious disease and serves as the medical director of Bascom Palmer’s Ocular Microbiology Laboratory.
“Our mission at AEVR is to highlight the value of eye and vision research for patients and our society, and at NAEVR to advocate for federal investment in eye and vision research,” said Dr. Paul Lee, Board President for NAEVR and AEVR. “Dr. Alfonso’s experience, achievements, and outstanding leadership at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute as a physician, surgeon, professor, and researcher will further enhance the Alliances work to improve awareness of the value of vision research and to grow funding for the NEI, NIH, and other vision research-oriented agencies.”
Dr. Alfonso joins fourteen current Board members that advise the Alliances and provide guidance and direction. AEVR continues to provide exceptional educational events and programs highlighting the value and impact of eye and vision research, and NAEVR is working diligently to increase awareness of, and federal funding for, eye and vision research.
The National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (NAEVR) is a 501(c)4 non-profit advocacy coalition comprised of professional, consumer, and industry organizations involved in eye and vision research. The Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (AEVR) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that conducts sustained educational efforts, such as its Research Saving Sight, Restoring Vision Initiative about the value of federally funded vision research.
