NAEVR and Research!America to Release New Vision and Blindness Fact Sheet at Capitol Hill Reception on January 25, 2005

(Washington, DC) Today, the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (NAEVR) announced that it will hold a Capitol Hill reception to release a new fact sheet entitled Vision and Blindness . The reception, to be held on Tuesday, January 25, 2005, from 5:30 - 7:00 pm in Senate Dirksen G-11, will feature comments from Neil M. Bressler, M.D., the James P. Gills Professor of Ophthalmology in the Wilmer Eye Institute at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Bressler, who has a large international practice, is also a leading ophthalmic researcher in the area of retinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Bressler will be joined by NAEVR Executive Director James Jorkasky and Research!America President Mark Woolley.

The Vision and Blindness fact sheet, developed by Research!America and The Lasker Foundation, in conjunction with NAEVR, is the first vision-related fact sheet within the Research!America series entitled Investment in Research Saves Lives and Money.

In commenting on the impending release of the fact sheet, NAEVR's James Jorkasky said, "The new Vision and Blindness fact sheet is an important resource as NAEVR advocates on Capitol Hill for adequate funding in Fiscal Year 2006 for eye and vision research at the National Eye Institute (NEI) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Bressler will add to the relevance of the information contained in the fact sheet as he relates his personal experience in treating patients and conducting research.

"The fact sheet is available on the Research!America Web site at and the NAEVR Web site at
