NAEVR Issues Inaugural Edition of E-Zine to Educate Capitol Hill About NEI-Funded Vision Research

(Washington, DC) Today, the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (NAEVR) announced the release of a quarterly electronic "E-Zine" newsletter dedicated to educating Members of Congress and their staffs about recent vision research funded by the National Eye Institute (NEI) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Congress funds the NIH and NEI through an appropriations process that results in a Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (LHHS) spending bill.

The NAEVR E-Zine's inaugural edition features stories about activities by NEI-funded researchers to: discover a genetic link to Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of vision loss, especially in seniors; demonstrate that older children can benefit from treatments for amblyopia, the most common eye disorder in children; and demonstrate that research into the physiology of the optic nerve in African Americans results in better techniques to detect glaucoma, which occurs at a rate three times more frequently in African Americans than in Caucasians. NEI previously reported that pressure-reducing eye drops can delay or prevent the onset of glaucoma in African Americans.

"The initial E-Zine topics, including the aging eye, pediatric vision and health disparities, show how NEI-funded research has the potential to ensure the best vision health of all Americans, no matter what age or race," said NAEVR Executive Director James Jorkasky. "Since NEI research results in treatments and therapies to restore vision and prevent the onset of eye disease, it is a cost-effective national investment in the productivity, independence and quality of life of all citizens."

The National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (NAEVR) is a non-profit advocacy coalition comprised of 50 professional, consumer and industry organizations involved in eye and vision research. NAEVR's goal is to achieve the best vision for all Americans through advocacy and public education for eye and vision research sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Eye Institute (NEI) and other federal research entities.
