After 6 months of negotiations, on April 14, 2011, Congress finally passed a bill which funds the government for the remainder of Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Because Congress passed a Continuing Resolution (CR) for the fiscal year as opposed to a regular appropriations bill, there was no Committee Report accompanying the bill which goes into detail on how each federal agency should carry out its priorities for the year. Therefore, the chart below contains NAEVR's estimate for NIH and National Eye Institute (NEI) funding. In addition, the chart below presents President Obama's proposed FY2012 funding for NIH/NEI, and the spending levels proposed by the Senate. The House is expected to use the Senate number as well.

In February 2009, Congress passed and President Obama signed a stimulus bill that included significant new funding for the National Institutes of Health and the National Eye Institute. Here is a breakdown of how the money is allocated:
