In September 2004, NAEVR's Board of Directors adopted the following policy statement regarding stem cell research:
"Be it resolved that the NAEVR Board of Directors supports expansion of the Embryonic Stem Cell Policy that was set forth by the Bush Administration on August 9, 2001."
During the 110th Congress, NAEVR worked with CAMR and the larger medical research community on efforts to expand stem cell research.
In June 2007, President Bush vetoed S. 5, and neither the House nor the Senate was able to override the veto.
The House and Senate had both passed S. 5, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007 by solid margins. The Senate by a vote of 63-34 on April 11th, and the House by a vote of 247 - 176 on June 7th.
NAEVR thanks everyone who contacted their Represenatives and Sentors to urge their support for this important legislation.
The National Institutes of Health has a Stem Cell information website.
