NAEVR is pleased to announce that eye and vision research was again included as an eligible area of study in the Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP) in the FY2008 Department of Defense Appropriations Bill, which was signed by the President on November 13. The PRMRP is part of the larger Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP), which manages the grants process for a number of medical research programs, including Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) research.

As reported here, the PRMRP was not funded in the FY2007 Congressional Appropriations process, primarily due to jurisdictional issues in the 109th Congress where it was subject to review under the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee and the House Military Quality of Life and Veterans Affairs Subcommittee. That jurisdictional issue was resolved when the 110th Congress convened and the new Democratic majority reorganized the appropriations subcommmitee structure.

NAEVR is tracking the FY2008 PRMRP as the cycle for grant applications progresses, and will be posting all relevant information here. The CDMRP has released a "pre-announcement" for the FY2008 PRMRP, which is available here.

If you are interested in receiving emails from NAEVR on the latest developments in the process or have any questions, email NAEVR's Advocacy Manager David Epstein, depstein@eyeresearch.org or contact him at 240-221-2902.

In the FY2006 PRMRP, six grants, for a total of $5.4 million, were awared to eye and vision researchers. Click here for more information on the researchers who were awarded grants.

NAEVR is also involved with support for other issues of interest to the eye and vision research community, such as Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). A number of legislative proposals are moving through Congress that have the potential to provide more funding for eye and vision research, so check back often for updates.
